The ZEM-Germany was founded in 2006 by Professor Baumgart after 20 years of work at the Surgical University Hospital in Munich and is still managed by him today. As the only center in Germany, ZEM-Germany exclusively treats shortenings and deformities of the arms and legs, thus providing years of expertise in this field. A special feature is the great experience with fully implantable distraction nails not only for leg lengthening but also for arm lengthening and bone defect treatment after accidents and bone tumors. Together with his team, Professor Baumgart treats patients from all over the world and is an international training expert for intramedullary distraction nails (FITBONE).
His training included visceral surgery, trauma surgery and special trauma surgery. He focused his expertise on novel leg lengthening systems and was appointed associate professor at the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich in 2005.
His further training included specialist training in orthopaedics and trauma surgery with a focus on tumor surgery. He habilitated on biological reconstruction in bone defects and deformities, especially after removal of malignant bone tumors.
