After graduating as an engineer in aerospace technology, Professor Baumgart had already contributed his knowledge uniquely to novel implant developments in the field of leg lengthening during his medical studies and later during his specialist training. In addition to numerous patents for surgical instruments and new areas of application for implants, he developed above all planning and surgical techniques that are now used worldwide. His training included visceral surgery, trauma surgery and special trauma surgery. He focused his expertise on novel systems for leg lengthening and was appointed associate professor at the Ludwig Maximilian University in Munich in 2005. He reports on his research and treatment results at numerous international congresses. Professor Baumgart is a consultant for the companies Implantcast, Orthofix and Wittenstein intens. He is an internationally recognized expert in the field of leg lengthening with fully implantable intramedullary distraction nails.
