Arm lengthening is required much less often than leg lengthening, although arms that are unequal in length or too short on both sides can also cause considerable problems. In the case of differences in length, many affected persons complain of tension in the spine during symmetry-emphasising activities, so that arm lengthening can provide pain relief and may well be medically indicated.
The shortening of an upper arm leads to tension in the cervical vertebrae and shoulders, not only when working at the computer or driving a motor vehicle, but also during sporting activities such as cycling. In short-stature patients, too short arms can make elementary personal hygiene impossible and can also lead to severe disabilities in the daily environment. In many cases, the short arms only become noticeable after an operation to lengthen the legs for reasons of proportion, or they become more prominent functionally because the patient has then come a little closer to "normality".

Lengthening nails are also much more advantageous on the upper arm than external fixators. Whenever possible, ZEM-Germany gives preference to these systems because the treatment comfort is much higher and hardly any scars remain. External fixators need to be used only if the initial length is so short that even custom-made products cannot fit.
